Here, we describe what it means to discard “safely” and how it can improve your game.
Discarding “safely” is a Gin Rummy Strategies where you throw away cards that you believe your opponent won’t be able to use. However, this approach has its limits because you can’t be sure of every card your opponent might have or need. Remember, your opponent can always choose to draw from the stock pile instead of picking up your discarded card.
In Gin Rummy, many cards can be used in different ways. They can be part of a sequence of three or more cards in order, or in a group of two or three cards with the same value.
Example: 567 678 789 777 7777
Based on the cards you have and the ones in the discard pile, you can eliminate some of the possible combinations.
If you stay attentive, you can figure out which cards to discard with complete certainty. For instance, if you have the King of Spades and Queen of Spades in your hand and your opponent discards a King, you can safely discard your King. This is because your opponent won’t be able to use it; they can’t complete a set of Kings or a run of Spades since you still have the Queen of Spades.
Always evaluate the risks when deciding which cards to discard. For instance, it’s generally wiser to discard a card with three potential combinations left rather than one with four. However, you should also take into account offensive strategies, which are discussed here.
Winning at Grand Gin Rummy involves balancing both aggressive and cautious strategies. To illustrate how to make “safe” discarding choices, let’s examine another example.
At the start of the game, the 4 of Spades was the top card. Neither you nor your opponent decided to take it. Here is what you have in your hand:
Since you don’t know where the 10-of-Clubs, Queen-of-Clubs, or other Jacks are, it’s best to hold onto your Jack-of-Clubs for now, as it could fit into one of six potential combinations. You have both the 10-of-Diamonds and 8-of-Diamonds, each of which can be used in one of five possible combinations. Your 7-of-Spades can only fit into one of four possible combinations because you have the 9-of-Spades and your opponent passed on the 4-of-Spades. They probably would have taken the 4-of-Spades if they had the 5-of-Spades or 6-of-Spades. Therefore, discarding the 7-of-Spades is likely your best move.
